The wreck that took place on the rainy afternoon of Sept. 24 shows how big a traffic mess can result - even when fatalities aren't involved.
Truck driver William Henderson of Detroit was headed south when he hit a slick curve and his empty trailer jackknifed. The trailer broke apart, sending an axle skidding across the highway. It smashed into the concrete divider, throwing blocks of it into northbound traffic, damaging two vehicles.
No one was seriously hurt, although Henderson was hospitalized briefly.
Both northbound and southbound traffic was alternately shut down for 1½ hours, not to reopen until after 3 p.m., leaving the highways backed up for the start of afternoon rush hour. Commuters were pushed onto other routes, such as Interstate 471, that were already full."
