Alcohol Possible Factor in Fatal Louisville Car Accident

Posted on Oct 27, 2009

Two people were killed in a Louisville car accident along the Watterson Expressway. The Louisville accident took place at approximately 3:00 AM on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009.

According to Louisville Metro Police, Stephanie Byrd, 31, of Jeffersonville, was driving the vehicle that caused the fatalities at the time of the accident. Police report that she was driving the wrong way on the Watterson Expressway. She was allegedly driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Kentucky expressway.

According to police, she struck a car head-on, killing Saul Figueroa Bautista, 32, of Louisville. Bautista was a father of three, according to the coroner’s office.

Neither driver was reportedly wearing their seatbelts. It is believed that Byrd did not have her headlights on at the time of the incident.

“Basically you have somebody who’s driving the right way on I-264, minding their own business and now they’re dead and there was no reason for that,” commented Sgt. Mike Minniear of the LMPD Traffic Unit.

No one knows why Byrd was driving the wrong way on the expressway, according to police. However, Minniear said that police believe that alcohol was a contributing factor though they can’t officially say it is.

Police report that a third vehicle, a minivan, was also involved in the accident.  No one in the van was injured when Byrd’s vehicle struck the minivan.

The incident along the Kentucky expressway is still under investigation by local authorities.
