New Details in Louisville Zoo Train Derailment

Posted on Jun 02, 2009

From WHAS11.com:

"A state official says Kentucky regulators inspected a miniature train at the Louisville Zoo in January. The Zoo Train passed inspection then and was inspected daily by a ride operator. The train, which was carrying 30 passengers at the time of the accident, can hold up to 50 passengers. Each car weighs 2700 pounds and can carry up to 3100 pounds. The train can reach a maximum speed of 12 mph.

Kentucky Department of Agriculture spokesman Ted Sloan said the agency had not received any prior complaints about the ride, which overturned Monday sending 22 of the 30 passengers to hospitals. Sloan said investigators were back at the zoo Tuesday morning.

As of Tuesday afternoon, five people are still in the hospital, three adults and two children.

A Kosair Children's Hospital spokesman says a 21-month-old girl was upgraded to serious condition on Tuesday. The girl's grandmother tells WHAS11 that she suffered facial injuries and may need plastic surgery to correct them. A 2-month-old boy, the girl's brother, has been cleared to go home but is remaining at the hospital with his mother and injured sister. The father of the two children is still at University of Louisville Medical Center in fair condition, with injuries to his leg."
